1. How Often To Get A Pap Smear
Women should start having Pap Smears by the age of 21 or three years after sexual intercourse.
Pap Smears should then be repeated on a yearly basis until age 30.
After age 30, low-risk patients may have a Pap Smear every three years.
Low-risk is defined as...
" three normal sequential Pap Smears, being in a monogamous relationship with one sexual partner for greater than three years, and no history of previous abnormal Pap Smears within the past five years."
In patients who have undergone a previous hysterectomy for noncervical indications, no further Pap Smears are necessary unless the patient is sexually active with a new partner.
