Hysteroscopic sterilization

Another procedure well suited to the office is hysteroscopic tubal sterilization or Essure. In this procedure, a hysteroscope is passed through the cervix into the uterine cavity. Sterile fluid (saline) is pumped through the scope to expand the cavity so that the openings in to the fallopian tubes can be seen. A small coil is then gently guided through the scope and into these openings. In the first three months after the procedure, the tube itself will form scar tissue around the coil creating a physical blockage so that sperm cannot reach the egg. This procedure is even more effective statistically than standard laparoscopic or postpartum tubal sterilization, nearly 100%. There is minimal pain during or after the procedure. Activity can return to normal the next day. An outpatient X-ray dye test is required three months after the procedure to ensure complete tubal blockage, so other contraception must be used until then.
